Know how to get out quickly if a fire starts.<\/h3>\n<h3>Be Prepared\u00a0 &#8211; Create an escape plan.<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Discuss how you will get outside.<\/li>\n<li>Practice your plan.<\/li>\n<li>Count the number of doors there are between your apartment and the nearest fire exit.<\/li>\n<li>Memorize the number in case you have to find the exit in the dark.<\/li>\n<li>Know where all the exit doors and stairs are on your floor.<\/li>\n<li>Learn your building evacuation plan if you have one.<\/li>\n<li>Create and practice an escape plan for your own apartment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Stay Calm<\/h3>\n<p><strong>In the event of a fire, stay calm. Move to the exit as you have practiced. Call the fire department once you are outside.<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If you hear a smoke alarm, evacuate your apartment and call 911.<\/li>\n<li>If your door feels warm to the touch, do not attempt to open it.\n<ul>\n<li>Call 9-1-1 and tell the dispatcher your apartment number and that you can\u2019t open your door.<\/li>\n<li>Stuff the cracks around the door with towels, rags, bedding, or tape.<\/li>\n<li>Cover vents.<\/li>\n<li>Wait at a window and signal for help with a flashlight or by waving a white cloth.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>If your apartment door is cool to the touch, open it slowly.\n<ul>\n<li>Stay low and check for smoke or fire in the hallway.<\/li>\n<li>If the hallway is safe, follow the evacuation plan.<\/li>\n<li>Never use an elevator to escape a fire. Always use the stairs<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Building Fire Safety<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Don\u2019t prop open exit or stairway doors. These are installed to slow the spread of heat and smoke if there is a fire.<\/li>\n<li>Speak to your apartment manager if you see a damaged smoke alarm, fire extinguisher, or an emergency light that has burned out.<\/li>\n<li>Make sure your apartment has working smoke alarms.<\/li>\n<li>Have a smoke alarm inside each sleeping room.<\/li>\n<li>Test your smoke alarms every month.<\/li>\n<li>Replace the batteries every year.<\/li>\n<li>Tell your apartment manager if you think there is a problem with one of your smoke alarms.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Wait Outside for the Fire Department<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Once you are outside, move away from the building. Always give the firefighters and fire trucks plenty of space. <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Stay outside.<\/li>\n<li>Do not go back inside for any reason.<\/li>\n<li>If you think someone is still inside, tell firefighters where you think they are.<\/li>\n<li>Wait until firefighters tell you it\u2019s safe to go back<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Safety Tips to prevent a fire in your apartment or condo<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Don\u2019t grill on your balcony.<\/li>\n<li>Extinguish candles as you leave a room.<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t place extension cords under carpet or across walkways.<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t overload electrical outlets.<\/li>\n<li>Stay in the kitchen while cooking.<\/li>\n<li>Keep flammable items away from the stove.<\/li>\n<li>Heat your air, not your stuff.
